Elective Title: 93IA740 — GENERAL OPHTHALMOLOGY TWO-WEEK CLINICAL ELECTIVE

Description:

This course is designed to serve as a 2-week introduction to general ophthalmology. This elective is ideal for students pursuing a general practice specialty that wish to gain more exposure to eye examination skills and the management of common eye diseases. This elective is flexible; students may contact the course director if they have a specific interest in the field, so that we may plan their clinical experience according to their needs. This 2-week elective is worth 2 elective credits. This elective may be paired with vacation or another 2-week (2 credit) elective, in a related or different field. Students who prefer a more in depth learning experience or who are considering a career in Ophthalmology should select the traditional 4-week (4 credit) elective, 93IA710 General Ophthalmology.

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Practice the basic eye examination techniques to check vision, pupil, eye motility, eye pressure by tonopen, and fundus examination through a un-dilated pupil (PC1, PC4)
  • 2) Demonstrate proficiency of direct ophthalmoscopy skills through the use of EYEsi direct ophthalmoscope simulator (PC4)
  • 3) Familiarize with the clinical findings of common eye diseases that include but are not limited to cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, etc. (MK3)

Assessment

  • Clinical Performance Evaluation Form; (1) Observation and feedback by residents/faculty mentor: 60% 2) Successfully complete all required modules on EYEsi direct ophthalmoscopy simulator: 40%)

This 2-week elective is worth 2 elective credits. This elective may be paired with vacation or another 2-week (2 credit) elective, in a related or different field. Students who prefer a more in depth learning experience or who are considering a career in Ophthalmology should select the traditional 4-week (4 credit) elective, 93IA710 General Ophthalmology. The work hours for this elective will primarily be from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. The availability is two students per month (1 student/2 weeks). Please note: VA credentialing is required. VA credentialing is a complex and time-sensitive process.
