Elective Title: 53MC701 — CARDIOLOGY

Description:

The student will work closely with the cardiology team that includes cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. The student will gain a wide exposure to clinical cardiology. Emphasis will be placed on history taking, physical diagnosis, diagnostic tests in cardiology and patient management. Rounds will be made daily with the cardiologist in the hospital, including the Coronary Care Unit and Progressive Care Units. The student will be encouraged and expected to participate in the decision making process regarding the care of the cardiology patient. Depending on the student's interest, ample opportunity can be given to gain exposure in the areas of echocardiography, electrocardiography, cardiac rehabilitation, cardiac catheterization, clinical electrophysiology, and clinical pharmacology. Students should expect to have call approximately one night per week and one weekend per month. There are no interns or residents in the hospital and, therefore, a significant amount of responsibility will be allowed for the senior student.
