Elective Title: 49LA716 — SURGERY OF THE HAND

Description:

This elective rotation is aimed at acquainting the student with the principles of clinical evaluation & surgical management of common to complex diseases of the hand and upper extremity. The student will rotate 1 on 1 with an attending hand surgeon at the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center (IHTSC), one of the premier educators and innovators in the prevention and treatment of upper extremity disorders. Anatomy, methods of examination, diagnosis, and patient management will be applied to a large volume of patients presenting to our renowned center of excellence, recognized across the world for our specialization in problems and injuries of the upper extremity. They will be educated through a mentorship model, and will have a balanced exposure to the field of hand surgery through a mix of clinic and operative cases, participating as first assist. The student will have the chance to engage in numerous educational opportunities afforded to our residents and fellows including our morning lecture series, cadaver labs, courses, and journal clubs, all led by IHTSC’s leaders in the field of hand surgery. In these settings, the medical student will interact with IUSM orthopedic residents and clinical faculty.

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Assist in the evaluation of patients which present to the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center or St) Vincent Hospital Emergency Room (PC1)
  • 2) Assist in the surgical care and follow-up of these patients (PC2)

  • Clinical Performance Evaluation Form; (Objective exam, Clinical Observation).
