93ZE760 — CLINICAL ULTRASOUND

Description:

Clinical ultrasound has become an invaluable tool for assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients in the emergency care setting. During this elective, participants will learn the basics of point of care ultrasound. Topics covered include: basic physics, knobology, eFAST, cardiac, first trimester OB, aorta, gallbladder, DVT and vascular access. The course will be limited to two students per month (excluding the month of July). Portions of the elective will be online learning modules that will require completion prior to hands-on scanning lessons. The hands-on portion of the elective will consist of multiple scanning sessions in the emergency department with US faculty, US fellow or resident teachers. The majority of hands-on scanning time will be spent in independent patient scanning in the emergency department. The student will be expected to present an interesting case/POC ultrasound topic at the end of the elective. The student will also be expected to perform a supervised OSCE or attend and assist in teaching at an POC ultrasound event by the end of the month.

Learning Objectives

• 1) Obtain and accurately interpret basic cardiac imaging/images (PC3)
• 2) Obtain and accurately interpret first trimester OB imaging/images (PC3)
• 3) Obtain and accurately interpret trauma ultrasound (eFAST) imaging/images (PC3)
• 4) Obtain and accurately interpret aorta ultrasound imaging/images (PC3)

Assessment

Clinical Performance Evaluation Form; Assessment will be done via multiple methods including (IUEM SDOT for eFAST exam): (1. A multiple-choice test. The questions will cover topics taught in the online lectures and during bedside teaching. 2. A hands-on assessment. The student will be asked to perform two of the ultrasound exams that were taught. Students will be graded on their ability to acquire appropriate images and correctly interpret the images in an OSCE/SDOT format. 3. Oral presentation. Students will be graded on their case presentation/critical appraisal. 4. Independent scanning. Must complete 50 scans independently with all required views and accurate interpretations. 5. The student must attain a score of 80% on each learning module in order to pass the course.)

Activities

The students will be required to complete five online modules: 1. Physics, 2. FAST, 3. Cardiac, 4. OB and 5. Aorta. Each Module has an assessment at the conclusion. Students must be present for multiple hands on scanning sessions that will be three in length. The schedule will depend on the availability of the scanning faculty, fellows and residents. They will also be required to scan independently. The student must perform at least 50 independent ultrasound examinations in the emergency department during the elective: 15 eFAST exams, 15 Cardiac Exams, 5 Aorta exams, 5 OB exams, 10 other (includes DVT, ocular, vascular access, soft tissue). Each exam must have a correct interpretation by the student. All ultrasound exams will be reviewed for accuracy and completeness by an ultrasound trained faculty member. (section removed) The student will be expected to attend the Ultrasound Academic Conferences during the elective. Generally scheduled on selected Friday mornings and includes scan review, literature review, and individual topical presentations. Students will be required to present an educational project/critical appraisal of an ultrasound topic of their choice. Typically given the last Academic Friday of the elective. (section removed) The student will also be expected to perform a supervised OSCE or attend and assist in teaching at an POC ultrasound event by the end of the month.
