2024-2025 Electives

93DA800 — ADVANCED SURGICAL ANATOMY TWO-WEEK ELECTIVE

Description:

This course is designed for medical students early in their clinical career who have interest in pursuing surgical
specialties and wish to review relevant anatomy prior to engaging in their clinical surgical electives. As such, students
are encouraged to engage in this course in their third year or beginning of their fourth year to best prepare for their
surgical electives and subsequent residency. Students who enroll will be able to review the relevant anatomy
associated with surgical procedures of interest in a specific region of the body, using a combination of sources,
including cadaveric dissection. Students will be required to undertake an in-depth study of a surgical approach of their
choosing and prepare a presentation to colleagues near the end of the course. This course is designed for students interested in all surgical specialties, including, but not limited to, orthopaedic, cardiothoracic, colorectal, OB/GYN, neuro, and general surgery. While only one region of the body will be covered during each elective rotation, opportunities may exist to explore the surgically-relevant anatomy of other body regions as available and desired.

Regions covered per rotation: R1A = back/spine, R1B = upper limb, R2A = thorax/abdomen, R2B = abdomen/pelvis, R3A = lower limb, R3B = head/neck. Students who enroll will also teach anatomy in the lab to first year health professional students (physician assistant, occupational therapy, and physical therapy) in an interprofessional gross anatomy course, providing additional opportunity to review clinically-relevant anatomy while building relationships with future health professional colleagues.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the appropriate anatomy learned in pre-clinical coursework in the context of clinically-relevant surgical approaches.(MK1
  • ) Engage in self-directed learning of surgically-relevant anatomy, including identifying appropriate sources for selfdirected learning of more detailed anatomy knowledge that may not have been covered in preclinical coursework.(PBLI1
  • ) Learn relevant anatomy encountered during common surgical procedures from a surgical standpoint (i.e. a small surgical incision rather than whole-body dissection).(MK1, PC4)
  • Present knowledge learned in a concise way to colleagues. (ICS1, ICS3, ICS4)
