Description:
This course will introduce students to the top rural health priorities in the United States today, including access to care, nutrition, mental health/ substance abuse, and chronic illness. One of the modules will also provide a brief overview of agricultural medicine. Grading is based on a quizzes, participation, and a final paper in three parts. Course requires a minimum of 4 participants to run, and a max of 20.

Learning Objectives
- 1) Describe common rural medical problems related to access to care, including barriers to physical and mental health care (SBP2)
- 2) Recall the major chronic and infectious diseases related to morbidity in rural areas (MK7, SBP2)
- 3) Describe common environmental health hazards for rural populations (SBP3, SBP2)
- 4) Explain how physicians must be aware of specific kinds of illnesses and injuries associated with agricultural work (SBP2)
- 5) Assess the major health needs and risks of a small rural community (SBP2)
Assessment
Professional Development Evaluation Form; (Quizzes (16): 64% Quizzes are a combination of multiple choice and short answer. Papers (3 @ 12%): 36% The three short writing assignments are graded based ability to follow the detailed guidelines of the assignment for content, as well as for clarity.)
Activities
Each of the seven course modules is divided into 1-4 smaller sections. Each section is presented in the form of a recorded online lecture with a short reading selection and is followed by a quiz. Students are required to participate in class by providing response questions based on the reading and engaging in discussion activities. There are three short papers for the course that conceptually build on one another to help students understand more about health needs in rural communities in Indiana, and how research on those needs could be undertaken. Sections include: 1. Overview of causes of mortality in rural states, demographics, and Rural Healthy People 2010 2. Access to care issues 3. Chronic illness 4. Maternal morbidity and mortality 5. Nutrition and obesity 6. Mental health and substance abuse 7. Agricultural medicine
