Description:

This elective will allow students to work with either a County Health Department, city health department, or a Federally Qualified Health Clinic (FQHC). The health departments and FQHCs offer a unique experience in the principles and practices of preventive medicine and public health at the regional level. Students may expect to study Indiana and regional (Northwest Indiana) data and high-priority public health problems including infectious diseases, food-borne disease outbreaks, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, maternal and child health, child or adult immunization, injury, and chronic disease.

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Describe the processes and approaches that contribute to the structure and function of a public health system. (SBP4)
  • 2) Identify health education resources and evaluate their quality and credibility. (PBLI1)
  • 3) Collaborate with a public health professional and outline the scope of their field work and authority. (SBP1)

Activities

Activities may include: - Staffing immunization clinic - Communicable disease contact tracing - Food safety inspection, home inspections - Environmental health inspections - Healthy homes inspections - Vital records - inspection of death certificates - Attend board of health public meetings - Vector Surveillance team - mosquito trapping - Emergency preparedness and pandemic response planning
