Elective Title: 02PS731 — PSYCHIATRY ELECTIVE

Description:

The course will provide an opportunity for the student to build on his or her clinical psychiatry clerkship knowledge base. In the ambulatory psychiatry practice students will focus on pharmacotherapy and have an active role in the diagnosis and treatment plans for patients under the guidance of the course director. The student will participate in observations of individual and group therapy in the treatment of mood, anxiety and substance use disorders. The student will be exposed to psychological testing protocols. In the inpatient setting students will be directly responsible for the primary medical and psychiatric management of patients under the direct supervision of a staff psychiatrist. A wide spectrum of psychopathology will be encountered, including but not limited to: schizophrenia, affective disorders, organic disorders, substance abuse, anxiety, and personality disorders. Students will have exposure to a diverse patient population including adult, child and adolescent patients. Students will participate in biological treatment modalities and various psychotherapeutic and behavioral treatment methods.

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Perform an Initial Psychiatric Evaluation (PC1)
  • 2) Form differential diagnosis and confirming or exclusionary tests (PC2)
  • 3) Differentiate between supportive and explorative psychotherapy. (MK4)
  • 4) Explain the type of psychotheraphy: cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, etc. (MK4)
  • 5) Explain the use of psychotropic medications for anxiety, mood and psychotic disorders. (MK4)
  • 6) Describe interactions of somatic and psychological issues. (MK3)
  • 7) Review a psychiatric chart with psychiartic testing and social work evaluations and formulate a treatment plan. (PC3)
  • 8) Use genetic testing and on-line drug information to anticipate drug interactions and anticipate their effectiveness. (PBLI2, MK6)
